Mariette Leufkens
October 9 to December 1, 2008
Part of our Tranquil Art program.
Working in the healing arts for 18 years led me to create these series of paintings for the spa industry.
Women with clay masks, women in hot tubs...a visit to the spa is like stepping into a different time zone.
My paintings are journeys into uncharted territory.
Intricate images entwine in a colorful archetypal playground, and yet, my paintings tell very personal stories.
They are little parts of me, intricate translations of my senses, intimations of my experiences.
My tales are feminine, revolving around an essential interconnectedness and the cycles of birth, living and death.
Small dots appear abundantly in my paintings again and again, painted by tiny brushes that take me into a timeless realm.
I was born in Tehran, Iran, a Dutch girl on a Middle Eastern landscape.
When I was four, my family and I returned to Holland, where I grew up in a small village on the outskirts of Amsterdam.
My artwork mixes gouache, acrylic paints, mediums, glazes, ink, gold leaf, Photoshop and collage.
My works are owned by private collectors in both the Netherlands and the United States.
